Get Fit!!

IMG00011.jpg I’ve never been on the cutting edge of gaming technology. I bought my first nintendo second hand from a friend years after it first came out. We had a Sega Genesis that I never really did much with and Amy and I still have an original Play Station that we fire up once a year for Scrabble or a Super Puzzle Fighter match. Otherwise, I’m content to not game too much. Except for the wii.

I bought the wii last year from a friend who found that he played his xBox more (xbox is still the ruler for FPS like HALO) and I’ve played it a bit. Downloaded the free stuff and even bought Super Mario Brothers for it (talk about OLD technology). I was surprised when I tried to locate a Wii Fit online last Wednesday when it came out, that I was able to order it no problems from Toys R Us.com. They even had a deal where I could get We Ski on sale at the same time, so I went ahead and got it as well.

The wii fit came yesterday. Amy’s having a Heritage Makers Celebration at the house tomorrow, so we said we’d put the Fit away and clean the house. Maybe pull it out on Sunday. Well, after a night of cleaning, I sat down on the couch to unwind a bit before bed and I pulled the box out and started opening it. Amy didn’t object. What followed was a hour and a half session of Wii Fit and Super Mario Brothers.

I have to say, I was pretty impressed. So far, the only thing I don’t like about it is the fact that you have to sync it with the wii for EVERY game that works with it. So I had to sync it for the wii fit game, and when we finally open We Ski, I’ll have to sync the board again. Its not too much of an issue, just a pain, but I can understand why it does that (it uses the 4th controller location, and if it sync’d permanently, then you wouldn’t be able to use the 4th wiimote). We setup out mii’s and were checked out in no time.

According to the Fit, my BMI is about 18 and amy’s is higher (but we knew that for the most part). My wii age is 39 (only 9 years off) and amy’s is again, higher. Not too much of a surprise. Amy was the first to go and she tried the yoga, needless to say, we weren’t dressed right, for it, but it wasn’t hard to follow and the basic exercises were easy to do. After amy got done with the yoga, I tried my hand at the balance games. Talk about hard.

The game where you are head butting soccer balls, is near impossible on the beginner level and the shoes and panda heads don’t make it any easier. The downhill slalom is fun as well and will take a little bit of time and the ski jump is pretty cool as well. Table tilt was by far the one balance game that was the best workout, as you really had to stay on your toes to drop the balls through the holes. We haven’t tried the strength training or the aerobics yet, but if they’re anything like the other areas, they’ll be pretty good as well.

Nintendo has done an excellent job with the wii fit. The package was nicely put together and the board seems sturdy enough (its rated up to 330 pounds). It came with 4 AA batteries, which is nice as thats what it wants and was pretty easy to get going. We’re going to keep track of our improvements over the next couple of months and I’ll post updates…. :)

BB Curve update

So its been a while since I’ve really posted. Yes, I did some twitter updates while in Vegas (which is a cool place to visit) and yes, we did go see O. It was, as I have said, completely bizarre and I do not ever need to see it again. Parts were wonderful, other parts left me with a profound sense of WTF?!?!

When I got back to work, the moving had begun and now, my office is half of the room we keep the servers in. Wouldn’t be too bad except for the noise of the fans and the AC always pumping out cold air. Kind of reminds me of my time at National Net. I’m finally at a point where i have somewhat workable space again (which is pretty hard to do here…) and I was browsing the Crackberry forums when I noticed something about an OS beta for the 8310 (the Curve from ATT with GPS) that enabled video taking and Youtube playing on it. So naturally I was intrigued. I downloaded the sucker, installed it and sure enough, I was able to record video on my curve.

AWESOME!!

Thats what you get when you hold the phone at arms length. Could be better, could be a lot worse. I did have to go through and clean it up a bit, but otherwise, I like the 4.5 os so far.

I’m also trying out a service called gpsed. It seems to be a better way to track with GPS than Blackberry Tracker and it allows for photo uploading and GPS tagging as well. So all the better. Check back soon and I’ll have more video and a link.

On its way…

I’ve installed Fedora 9 preview on a boxen here at the HQ and so far, outside of some SEL issues preventing me from accessing the net I’m pretty impressed. Whats more impressive is that Linux is taking more news from the mainstream media.

For instance, this week in eWeek, there was a fairly decent write up on the latest release from Ubuntu. Actually extolling the goodness that is Ubuntu and how well they’ve done in coming up with a friendly, easy to use product that could be a viable alternative to Windows.

Previously, such articles were reserved for wisened old nix gurus in specialty mags, but the fact that Ubuntu earned a two page spread in eWeek (a fairly MS biased trade publication) is something to be excited about… now if only they’d switch their color schemes to something more friendly….

Banjo Pickin Girl

So I’m a banjo pickin guy. I’ve been playing since January and as I’ve said in previous posts, I’m getting better every day. I just need to sit down and make sure that I actually practice so that I don’t throw away the money we’ve put in to the lessons.

Listening to Abigail Washburn though, makes me yearn to play like I’ve been pickin for years. She has a magic way about her on the 5 string and its noticeable on this album. Makes me wish Amy was a banjo pickin girl….

Scuba from your couch!

I’ve been a certified Scuba diver since I was 14. I’ve been diving a total of 5 times (thats in about 15 years). I’ve introduced Amy to snorkling (we’ve even bought our own snorkel gear) and she likes it enough that she’s willing to get dive certified as well when we have the time and the money. I’ve had the wii for about 7 months. Outside of the sports games that came with it, we haven’t really played with it until I found Endless Ocean for the wii.

This game is the coolest thing outside of being in the water… and the best part is no sea sickness!! I’ve been diving a total of 5 days so far on it and I’ve swum with dolphins, penguins, sharks, whales and a myriad of other aquatic life. I’ve been down to a depth of 500 feet (something that I don’t think I’d ever do in real life) and I’ve had a ball.

While the people in the game could use a little work and the dialog is all text based, the underwater scenes are amazing. The fish life like and it has a pretty good knowledge base for all the fish. All in all I’m pretty impressed with endless ocean and would definately recommend it.

Of course, I’m also preordering my wii fit!

Another Season is Upon us…

Well, baseball kicked off last month (the beginning of April) and by this point we were supposed to have had three Friday Night Fireworks shows…. So far, we’ve had two. The April 4th show was rained out (game called before it even started) but the other two have been superb shows so far.

Each show has a theme to it (chosen several months ago by the Braves) and it choreographed to the music so that its prettier than a dance. The shows are taking us about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to layout and wire, but we’re still done with plenty of time to spare and so far, we’ve had two 100% shows (which is pretty damned good).

This past week Gruntled came by with a couple of his friends and they were able to see the setup before we shot. I don’t think they realized what it took to put on a show like this. Most people are amazed when they see the final product (especially after seeing what it looks like setup).

Anywho, I found some video of the 4/18 show (it was latin themed) on myspace… so here….
